Demonstrators have attacked police during violent clashes in central London. The far-right group Britain First has massed at the statue of Winston Churchill and the Cenotaph in London with a pledge to “guard our monuments”.
Police had urged people not to attend the planned rally in London after the government warnings over social distancing, and the breakout of violence and defacing of public monuments in the city during protests last weekend.
The Met Police has placed restrictions on several groups intending to protest, following violent scenes last weekend. However, the Black Lives Matter protest was cancelled. Right-wing activists who did turn up in central London have clashed with police.
Large groups of far-right protesters then moved to Trafalgar Square, where fireworks were thrown across the crowds.
